NANDA – March 18th at 7pm

NANDA

On Friday, March 18th at 7pm, Cordova Arts is sponsoring a performance by Nanda, a four-man performing arts group characterized by a calculated chaos of dancing, juggling, music, acrobatics, slow motion and high energy kung-faux fighting.

The show promises to be exuberantly innovative & widely appealing to audiences of all ages. More than a concert, the event will cross the boundaries of theater. Nanda is life on the edge, a fantastical risk-a-thon where comic ninja warriors bust down all expectation with a show that is hilariously funny and physically brilliant.

Nanda will be featuring it’s first full-length show. In “The Jacket,” an  omnipotent jacket imbues the wearer with super human power in a  performance jam-packed with acrobatics, juggling, combat, music, and comedy. Now in its sixth season, Nanda  is hot off the international stage, the toast of Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival, King 5 News, and the New Old Time Chautauqua.  Nanda has  performed throughout the US, Mexico, and Canada. Howard Patterson of the  Flying Karamazov Brothers says of the group, “The Nanda boys do things I  always wanted the Karamazovs to do, but couldn’t hire the talent… Go Nanda!  Banzai!”

West Coast natives, the members of Nanda shared a childhood in Port Townsend,  WA, a small town on the edge of the Olympic Peninsula where they were raised  among the absurd and the talented, vaudevillians and magicians, the good, the bad, and the juggley. Two years ago, they burst onto  the international scene, playing to packed houses and rave reviews.

The performance at Cordova High School will begin at 7:00pm with an opening act of live music by the Copper River Drifters. After a brief intermission, featuring root beer floats, the Nanda acrobaticalists will take the stage. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students/seniors and $30 for families. As always, there is a $5 rebate for anyone who purchases a new membership to Cordova Arts at the door.

This performance is supported by a generous grant by the Alaska State Council on the Arts.

Alaska Positive Exhibition – opening 3/4/11

The Cordova Historical Museum will proudly open Alaska Positive on Friday, March 4 from 5-7pm.

Every two years the Alaska State Museum samples the best of Alaskan photographic art through a competitive exhibition judged by a prominent photographer.  The 2010 show’s juror was Richard Ross, an internationally-known photographer from Santa Barbara, where he is on the faculty of the University of California. He has photographed for Time, Newsweek, Vogue, and numerous other magazines and newspapers in the U.S. and in Europe. He has an extensive record of exhibitions and is the recipient of Guggenheim, Fulbright and NEA fellowships.  Ross selected 44 photographs by 36 photographers for inclusion. Overall, 71 Alaskan photographers submitted 250 works for the competition.

“There was some work included because it challenged; others because of a visceral response to the beauty of the scene” – Richard Ross.

Radoslav Lorkovic in Concert!

There is no better way to warm up on a cold February night than with sizzling hot music. Radoslav Lorkovic will be back in town for a performance on Friday, February 25th at 7pm at the high school. Lorkovic’s style of piano and accordion playing is unique. A classically trained pianist, he detoured into the world of blues and toured at the age of 20 with Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Several years later he joined forces with Greg Brown, Richard Shindell and Odetta. Lorkovic later picked up a host of other influences including Tex-Mex and Zydeco, adding accordion virtuosity to his list of talents. He currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Festival, Womad, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Mountain Stage, Prairie Home Companion as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas, and obviously Alaska!

Lorkovic is known around the world for his passionate and flamboyant playing style. He is currently working to promote the album Bright Example featuring Sara Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion. He will be wedging in his performance in Cordova between an appearance on the Carson Daly show in Los Angeles and an appearance on Mountain Stage in Charleston, West Virginia.

Lorkovic will be offering private piano lessons on February 24th and 25th. Sign up here with the link “Lessons with Radoslav” in the sidebar. “My daughter had a fabulous time at her lesson with Radoslav. He’s a kind and generous teacher who knows how to meet students at their level of playing and help them explore their musical creativity,” said Amy Houck. This is an opportunity for students of any age to work with a professional musician who can help them push their playing to the next level.

Tickets for the February 25th show are available at the door at Cordova High School: $10 for adults, $5 for students/seniors, $40 for families. Ticket price reduced by $5 with a new membership purchased at the door. Erin Cooper says, “Radoslav’s performance will be a fun energetic evening that the whole family will enjoy.”
